We fund ten Social Profit Organisations (SPOs) for three to six years at a time.
The lever
We fund the organisation itself.
A foundation is rarely the best placed to do the work itself. On most of our themes there is already an organisation on the ground, closer to the people it serves than we will ever be, doing work we could not do better ourselves. What it often lacks is the stability to plan beyond the current year.
So on these themes we do not go looking for projects. We look for the organisation that pulls the strongest lever on the theme, and we fund that organisation, with objectives agreed on both sides.
Sometimes the money is dedicated to one program inside the organisation. It stays structural funding: it pays for that work to grow, not for a project that ends when the budget does.

The selection
How an organisation gets here.
They answer a call
SPOs apply when we open a call, and we weigh each one on the impact it could reach. The entrepreneurial attitude counts as much as the theme: we look for organisations that build and take risks, the way an entrepreneur does. Then comes a due diligence on the organisation.
We fund three to six years
The ones we choose are funded structurally, with objectives agreed together rather than conditions imposed. Annual reviews, and a decision at three years on whether to continue into a next cycle.
We stay involved
We manage the portfolio actively: alignment meetings, a board observer where it helps, and impact measured across all of it.
